bee icon FQA (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q- What pants should I dye?
A- This typically depends on the pageant you are entering. Most pageants have a clothing sponsor that you must adhere to.
PRCA Contests- Wrangler
High School and Junior High Rodeo- Cinch
NLBRA- Wrangler
Junior Rodeo and Local Contests- usually no title sponsor but Wrangler is the most commonly used

Q- What do I need to send to match the color?
A- The best thing to send for me to match a color perfectly is a 4”x4” scrap of fabric. Anything smaller makes it very difficult to get a correct match. If that’s not possible, send the garment itself or the matching belt, if there is one. If the fabric sample is sheer or sequin and I’m matching boots or belts, it’s best for you to find a solid fabric of the same color to match (sometimes the lining works great). If there isn’t one, I must find a paint sample to match as the machine I use to match colors at the auto body shop and hardware store calibrates such a small area of fabric that it sees through it or catches light and will not make an accurate match. I also use a color matching app to help me with this process if needed.

Q- Where do I purchase jeans?
A- Women’s Sizes- Wrangler Q Baby Jeans Amazon is the least expensive option I’ve found-Wrangler Women's Q-Baby Mid Rise Boot Cut Ultimate Riding Jean https://a.co/d/45JKOur or Riding Warehouse-https://www.ridingwarehouse.com/search-english.html Utah Stores that carry Wrangler Q Baby’s Smith and Edwards (Ogden) Reams Boots and Jeans (Layton) Bolt Ranch Store (Kamas) Cinch Womens Sizes- the only place I am aware of, where you can order white Cinch jeans is directly from CinchJeans.com (please let me know if you find any other resources!) https://www.cinchjeans.com/store/pc/Women-s-ADA-Relaxed-Fit-Prepared-For-Dye-211p76353.htm I have not found any stores in Utah or Idaho that sell white Cinch jeans. Kids Sizes- Unfortunately Wrangler now only makes Q Baby’s in women’s sizes. But they do make white dyeable Wrangler Cowboy Cut Jeans. These are boys sizes but you can even have them altered to have a more girly fit. Hopefully they give us better options in the near future. Riding Warehouse is the least expensive option I’ve found. https://www.ridingwarehouse.com/Wrangler_Cowboy_Cut_4H__FFA_Boys_Unisex_White_Jeans/descpage-WWJ.html?color=" I have not found any store in Utah or Idaho that carry white wranglers. Please let me know if you do!

Q- Can you dye pants that have been worn or washed?
A- Yes I can! Unfortunately sometimes you don’t know what has been done to a pair of pants if you are purchasing them used or have already worn them or washed them. If any bleach has been used on a pair of pants, the fabric will no longer accept dye. I’ve even seen pants that have stain remover spots that won’t acccept dye. New, never worn pants are always the safest option!

Q- Can you strip or redye pants that have already been dyed?
A- Yes I can! I use a commercial grade chemical stripper that can usually get most color out of any pants. Just keep in mind that stripped pants do not accept dye the same as new pants. Pants can usually be stripped only once or twice (depending on the color) and redyed before they stop accepting color. Blues and Turquoise are the hardest colors to strip from pants. Redyeing pants is often successful! But please be aware that dye does not behave the same way the second time around, especially when dyeing over another color.

Q- What boots can I dye?
A- Genuine full grain leather boots are best to dye. If they have paint or a finish on them, they must be stripped and sanded before I paint. I do this to every boot, but prefer if they are unpainted. If I have to strip heavy paint off, I have to charge a little extra because of the time and expense. Ferrini sells a white dyeable riding boot that I love. Here is the best deal I’ve found on them: https://www.sstack.com/ferrini-ladies-dyeable.../p/34070/" Justin also sells a white dyeable dress boot that I love! You need a special order to purchase the. Many western stores can access the order form and Justin provides it directly to State Titleholders. I can dye synthetic leather boots but they will crack and bubble at some point. Best to save the trouble and expense and buy real leather boots! I also always include the matched paint in your order for touch ups.

Q- What technique do you use to paint belts and boots?
A- I use a pneumatic air brush to paint all of my boots and belts. It gives a flawless and even coverage. I also seal the leather paint with an industrial leather waterproof sealer.

Q- What belt can I dye?
A- Again, any genuine full grain leather belt is best to dye. To accommodate a belt buckle, you want to look for something with a snap closure or Chicago screw. Brooke Lange with Blue Ridge Rags Rodeo Queen Clothing often has white dyeable belts for sale that are great! I usually have a few of these on hand if you need to purchase one or you can buy them directly from her.

Q- Where can I get shirts and dresses made?
A- I am fortunate to work with several very talented designers! They each have their own unique specialties, styles and price points. I can give you more information on any of them if needed. Please check out their pages or contact them to see their beautiful work. Here are my recommendations:

Morgan Perkins
